Teachers Pension tiered contributions - how does it affect you

Teachers' Pensions have recently finalised and issued their guidance on the new tiered contribution rates effective from 1 April 2012.

But how will it affect your employees. The highest paid emplyees may see their contribution rate increase by over 37% whilst the lowest remain unaffected.

There is a useful page on the Teachers' Pension website that contains a contributions increase calculator

Good news on Academy LGPS employer contribution rates

Many of the new Academies have faced problems and inconsistent treatment in respect of the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS). As an Academy the Academy Trust becomes a Scheme Employer under the LGPS meaning that non-teaching staff are eligible for membership of the pension scheme.

With the number of Academy conversions now significant (by December 2011 there were 1463) this has become a major issue.

Teachers Pension Scheme - increase in employees contributions for 2012-2013

On the 16th December the Department for Education released the outcome of the consultation on Teachers Pension Contributions for the year 2012-13 and confirmed significant changes for its members.

These changes are part of the Government’s long-term reforms. They are aimed at controlling the increased costs of people living longer and re-balance the contributions paid by scheme members and taxpayers, balancing that with ensuring public service pensions remain among the best available.

Teachers Pension Scheme Reforms - New details issued

A comprehensive new article from the Department for Education released today outlined the proposed changes for the Teachers’ Pension Scheme.

The Government states it "wants the Teachers’ Pension Scheme to be one of the best pensions available. The proposed scheme keeps high quality benefits that teachers deserve whilst balancing the need for a more sustainable scheme that is fairer to taxpayers."

Out with EMA and in with Bursary Payments

The EMA payment regime is ending and it is being replaced by the Bursary payments scheme.

More discretionary than the previous regime it is designed to target those teenagers in more need than the blanket £30 payment and with the exception of the £1,200 awarded to those in most need they can also decide the amounts.

However, schools and colleges are responsible for making the payments. If you suddenly find yourselves needing to make Bursary Payments then Dataplan Education can help with our BACS services.

Teachers to pay £327m additional contributions per annum

Under the latest round of proposals members of the Teachers Pension will be asked to increases their member contribution to retain their pension benefits

Affecting everyone but Teachers currently receiving £15,000 or less the proposals suggest a banding structure based on their full time salary, similar to the existing Local Government Pension Schemes.

Private tutors may face a lesson from HMRC

Lets face it there is a huge shortfall in the public coffers and in part HMRC are expected to contribute to this by increasing the tax revenues generated. The new tatctic from HMRC though is to announce in advance which areas they will be focussing on because they believe that there are extra tax revenue to be generated.

Unfortunately for those in the teaching profession you could be a target. In the world of pushy parents and the desire for our children to excel the demand for private tuition has increased. And HMRC are aware of this.

Academies - Local Government Pension hidden cost?

We are currently in the full thrust of schools converting to Academies. The process is becoming more streamlind as time passes but there is still one trap out there for any unsuspecting converts.

And that is the LGPS.

By converting the new Academy becomes a separate employer for LGPS purposes and is dealt with as a sepaate entity to the Local Education Authority.

Converting to an Academy - the payroll considerations

Many schools are now converting to Academy status.

With Academy status comes greater freedom and often a move away from the Local Authority for support services. Payroll services fall firmly in that camp.

But what are the payroll considerations when you convert to an Academy? An Academy is a new entity and as such a new employer so there is plenty to do. This breaks down into 3 key areas
