Safeguarding Management Allowances for Classroom Teachers

The safeguarded sum paid to those teachers who were awarded a ‘Management Allowance’ from 1 January 2006 expired on 31 December 2008.

Annual salary assessment forms should have been completed for all teachers for 2008/09 with an instruction to their payroll provider to cease paying the safeguarded amount (where this has not already happened, eg through awarding TLRs).

Head teachers are reminded that they were able to require teachers who received a safeguarded management allowance to undertaking additional responsibilities not required of all classroom teachers.  Head teachers are advised that where such safeguarding arrangements including interim additional duties were put in place teachers expected to undertake these additional duties should cease to do so (unless these additional responsibilities are covered by a TLR payment).

You may still have some staff in school whose management allowances are protected under Section 2, paragraphs 45.1 to 45.9 of the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document, where that protection has not yet expired.
